Chicago ORD: What to Do on a Layover

Getting from the airport

ORD to city center: 48 minutes by metro (Blue Line). Trains run every 15 minutes. Service runs 05:00 to 23:30. Skip the taxi unless your connection is under 5 hours.

What to do in Chicago

The stops worth making: Millennium Park & Bean, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago deep dish pizza, Navy Pier. Rated above 4.4: Navy Pier (4.6), Millennium Park (4.8), Shedd Aquarium (4.5), Willis Tower (4.5), Lincoln Park Zoo (4.6). You do not need the full tourist circuit. Pick two and commit.

Visa and entry

Chicago is visa-free for US passports. No application, no fee. The border process at ORD is standard. Budget 30 minutes.

How long do you need

The minimum useful layover is 4 hours. That gives you 48 minutes in each direction plus about 54 minutes on the ground. Up to 24 hours is a proper overnight.
