Zurich ZRH: What to Do on a Layover

Getting from the airport

ZRH to city center: 51 minutes by rail (S9). Trains run every 6 minutes. Service runs 05:00 to 23:30. Skip the taxi unless your connection is under 5 hours.

What to do in Zurich

The stops worth making: Old Town Zürich, Lake Zürich, Lindenhügel views, Swiss chocolate. Rated above 4.4: Zoo Zürich (4.6), Kunsthaus Zürich (4.7), Zürich Opera House (4.7), Swiss National Museum (4.6), Grossmünster (4.5). You do not need the full tourist circuit. Pick two and commit.

Visa and entry

Zurich is visa-free for US passports. No application, no fee. The border process at ZRH is efficient. Expect 15 minutes or less.

How long do you need

Plan for at least 5 hours to leave the airport comfortably. The transit alone is 51 minutes each way. Up to 48 hours makes it a proper overnight.
