Por layover.ing™ · 14 de marzo de 2026 · 2 min de lectura

Trastevere in 4 hours: cobblestones, carbonara, espresso by the Tiber.

Getting from the airport

FCO to city center: 32 minutes by rail (Leonardo Express). Fare is $14. Trains run every 30 minutes. Service runs 06:23 to 23:23. Skip the taxi unless your connection is under 5 hours.

What to do in Rome

The stops worth making: Colosseum, Vatican City, Trastevere, Roman Forum. Rated above 4.4: Colosseum (4.8), Trevi Fountain (4.7), Pantheon (4.8), Spanish Steps (4.6), Saint Peter’s Basilica (4.8). You do not need the full tourist circuit. Pick two and commit.

Visa and entry

Rome is visa-free for US passports. No application, no fee. The border process at FCO is standard. Budget 30 minutes.

How long do you need

The minimum useful layover is 5 hours. That gives you 32 minutes in each direction plus about 146 minutes on the ground. Up to 72 hours is a proper overnight.

FCO airport

FCO has 10 lounges. For short connections under 4 hours, the terminal is the destination: food options, showers, and enough space to reset before the next leg.
